We are always looking for instructors to present various topics relating to older building care and woodworking. Contact Chuck to discuss your ideas.

Daily Schedule
All classes begin at 9:00 AM sharp.  Please arrive at 8:30 AM to give yourself time to get settled before class begins.  A light breakfast with coffee, hot tea and juice will be served beginning at 8:30 AM.  A box lunch will be served at noon.  Both meals are included in your course fees.

Skill Levels
Our novice and homeowner classes assume that each student is a beginner.  The more advanced workshops often will have prerequisites to prepare the students for the level of skill required to complete those tasks.  If you have a question about skills needed or if you feel that your experience would exempt you from the prerequisites – call we can discuss it with you.

Cancellation
We will strive to have all classes on the scheduled dates, unfortunately, at times circumstances beyond our control occur that may require us to cancel or change the date of a class.  If our new date does not fit into your schedule, we will send you a full refund.

However if you need to cancel a class for any reason, please call us at (717) 291-4688.  If you withdraw from the class more than 30 days before the date of the class, we will refund any deposits received.  If you give less than a 30-day notice, we will only refund your payments if we can fill your place in the class. 

Tools and Materials
We will provide all safety equipment for use during the class.  A list of required hand tools will be provided with each class registration.  A material fee can be added to the course fees depending on the type of project and the amount of material used please check the course descriptions to see if this fee will apply.

Age Requirements
Because of insurance regulations all class participants must be at least 18 years old.  We do not provide child care for children while their parents attend our classes.

Dress
Please wear practical work clothes and shoes.

Class Payment
Once you register for a class please send $75.00 deposit to hold your place in the class.  Full payment is due 30 days before the class date.  Your payment will insure that you have a space in the class.  If the class requires more than one weekend to complete you must commit to attending all classes, if you cannot attend a class after the session has begun it is understood that you will be responsible for the tuition for the remaining classes.

Learn to remove, repair, and reinstall window sash.  Glazing, where to buy salvaged glass, and repair of counterweight systems also included.

Learn to repair plaster using a traditional three coat process, how to mix traditional plaster mixtures, and where to buy materials.

Paint: Prep, Choosing the Appropriate Materials, Colors, and Techniques
The preparation before painting is as important as the paint.  Learn to prepare the surface for painting, do simple wood repair, which materials to use, how to choose a historic color for your space, and techniques for a smooth finish paint job.

Historic Masonry Care and Repointing
Learn to care for your stone or brick building.  How to repoint using the traditional mortars is also taught.

Learn how to make your older home energy efficient without damaging the historic nature of the building.  How to make your own interior storm windows will also be taught.

Repair, refinishing, and rehanging an original exterior door removing paint from existing hardware is also taught.

Learn to find the cause of moisture in a building and how to stop the moisture entering the building.

Woodworking, Furniture and Cabinet Making Classes

Traditional Joinery - July 19 and 20

Learn traditional joinery including true mortise and tenon, spline, half lap, and miter joints.  Some hand tools required – list will be provided upon registration.
Skill Level: Beginner

Small Furniture Style Cabinet (Part 1)
Build a small cabinet free standing using furniture making techniques.  You can choose from three different plans for the cabinet design and some hand tools are required – options and tool list provided upon registration.

Registration for this class requires commitment for Part 2.

Small Furniture Style Cabinet (Part 2)
Prerequisite: Part 1 – in this session the cabinet will be completed and basic finishing techniques will be taught.

An introduction to hand tools this class covers use, care of, and sharpening of your tools.  List of tools to be brought to class given upon registration.

Build Colonial Style Mirrors

Build a picture frame using traditional joinery, pegs, and contrasting wood for the sticking.  Some hand tools required – list will be provided upon registration.
